THPRD was formed in 1955 by a group of foresighted citizens led by local physical education teacher Elsie Stuhr. The group envisioned that Beaverton would grow dramatically and that its residents would need recreational facilities. Today, THPRD is the largest special park and recreation district in Oregon, spanning about 50 square miles and serving more than 200,000 residents in the greater Beaverton area.
